Description:

Nintedanib is an orally available tyrosine kinase receptor antagonist that inhibits collagen formation and is used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Elevations in serum enzyme levels during nintedanib therapy are not uncommon, but it has yet to be implicated in cases of clinically apparent liver injury with jaundice.

Medical uses:

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis:

Nintedanib is used for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).It has been shown to slow down decrease in forced vital capacity,and it also improves people's quality of life.

Lung cancer:

It is also used in combination with docetaxel as a second line treatment for adult patients with locally advanced, metastatic, or locally recurring NSCLC of adenocarcinoma histology.It is unclear how this combination compares to other second line agents as the comparisons have not been done as of 2014.

How it works:

Nintedanib is a cancer growth blocker. It blocks particular proteins called protein kinases on the cancer cells. The protein kinases encourage the cancer to grow. Nintedanib blocks a number of these proteins and is called a multi kinase inhibitor. It also stops the cancer cells growing their own blood vessels, which the cells need to be able to grow.

Nintedanib may shrink the cancer or stop it growing for a time.

Who is eligible for nintedanib?

Nintedanib is licensed for the treatment of mild to moderate IPF, and NICE have laid down certain criteria for physicians to prescribe nintedanib within the NHS.

The lung function criteria for obtaining nintedanib is the same as that of pirfenidone with a Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) of between 50-80% predicted for age, height and weight. This means that your FVC must be between 50 - 80% predicted.
