Osthole is a natural coumarin that was first isolated from several medicinal plants, including C. monnieri and A. pubescens. It is reported to induce a nonspecific elevation of cAMP and cGMP levels through its ability to inhibit phosphodiesterases, which leads to a modulation of calcium channel signaling and vasorelaxant effects.1 Osthole exhibits immunomodulatory, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties, by regulating the expression of TNF-α, NF-κB, TGF-β, cyclooxygenases, leukotrienes, nitric oxide, ERK, and JNK. It also demonstrates antifibrotic effects in both hepatic and myocardial tissues and has been suggested to be a natural activator of defective delta F508-cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator chloride channel gating.

The normalization of plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) has been proved to be a strategy for preventing the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infection. It is concluded that osthole exerts a non-specific relaxant effect on the trachealis by inhibiting the cAMP and cGMP phosphodiesterases.
