It competes with aldosterone in the cortical epithelial cells of distal tubules and collecting ducts for the aldosterone receptor in the target cells, so as to inhibit the role of aldosterone in promoting sodium and potassium exchange, increase the excretion of sodium chloride and have a diuretic effect, while potassium ions can be retained. Therefore, spironolactone is a kind of potassium preserving diuretic drug.
